  • My friends in Hawaii~

Jarrett have planned to writting this memoir for a long time, but it's different for me to decide who I should record.
For example, Olivia, Masa, Kenta,Kazu, Bam, Ayako, Kazu, Sachiko,Thuy, Ayaka, Satomi, Q, K, Kyeong, Peter, Kozue, Miharu, Yukino, Tresun, Young hwan, Ian, Yi-Hsuan, kyokosan, Masami, nita, and ikumi help me a lot and share our feelings to each other.
To simplify this memoir, I chosen ten friends who has strong interaction with me and make me have more diversities.
Special in Olivia, I thought a lot should I record some thing about her, but I give up because the growth is based on the secrets.

10 people who represent three groups  were chosen to record in this memoir.
They are
1. Naokisan   Shimpeikun   Erisan   Erinachan
2. Norikosan   Atsushisan   Azusachan
3.Cheng   Ling   Tom
The portrays below are the affections, feelings and experiences of mine about them:

1. Naokisan:
He is one of the most affecting person for me in my Hawaii life.
I respect him and love him like my father.
For me, he showed the current Japanese middle class thoughts and behaviors, which made me believe Japan will be strong more and more.
The personality of him is responsibility.
He love his work, his life, and his family.
Observing him you will find he complies with the Confucian Thoughts.
To cultivate his moral character(修身), to govern his family(齊家), and manage his department and company (治國) could be observed easily in his talking and thoughts.
I have written an article"Japanese views of Japan and Taiwan relationship" to exhibit one of his thoughts.
Actually, I was confused by him and mistook that he was a "Sukebe" (好色 libidinous) person.
After several weeks, I realize he is a very easy-going and funny person like my old brother and young father and love him.
And his son, 正太, who is a 3 years old cute boy, impressed me so much.
Naokisan is the model of wonderful father I want to be.

2. Shimpeikun
Shimpeikun is very handsome from the first impression of him which I believe he was a playboy, but I mistook again!
His great is not only on his good look or talent , but also on his personalities.
If you get along with him, you will find that he has a power of pacifying and encouraging others.
I learned a lot from him although he is just 23 year old handsome young man without work experience.
But I have already predicted his success in the future.
The best description of the temperament of him is "the power of modest"!
A really great young man I have never seen ~

3. Erisan
Erisan tends to catch the attention.
She have a pretty and kawaii face and always smile, and if you see her, you will be affected happy from her.
But don't only think she only has beauty, her personality is praised by everyone who got along with her.
Her mind and personality is mature, of which I will strongly agree "the power of sweet".
However, her stories is so sad that she told us ( I believed)that she always met bad guys.
Yes! with a beautiful face and good personality, there are always a lot of pursuers around her.
This situation make this kind of beautiful girls choose bad guys easily.
For such a wonderful woman, I wish she could confirm her determination and find a good husband in the future.

4. Erinachan
Erinachan who I believe is the most attractive girl in HELP is 22 year old young lady.
Not only with easy-going quailty but also the sweetest smile does she have.
If you see her, you will feel relaxing and happy.
If you talk to her, you will vibrate her kindness and easy-going quality.
Haha~ the most funny thing is that looking at her appearances when eating, you will enjoy that everything is delicious.
She is a smart, kind, determinated, and vigorous girl, who I strongly believe that everyone who get along with her will like her easily~
Erina! make your dream come true!

5. Norikosan
Norikosan is great woman, who could represent why men in the world will believe Japanese girl is the best wif in the world.
She has the quality of taking care the family, deal with everything for her husband, mature and perfect personality, and rational and smart thoughts.
She could be a good wife, mother and teacher!
After I got along with her for two months, I will raise my thumb when I recall her every time.
Her boyfriend is also a great man, like Naokisan I respect him so much.
This couple like a ocean of treasure makes the people around them benefit endless.

6. Atsushisan
Atsushisan has the personality I want to have.
Having the same interests in history and make friends, we realize each other very quickly.
He is always like my old brother, taking care of, teaching, and sharing the feelings with me, and making me laugh.
His personality makes his friends endless, and everyone love and respect him the same as what he treat for others.
Independence, hospitality, and care for friends is what I should learn from him.

7. Azusachan
Azusachan is a kawaii girl, who surpised me when I saw her because she looked like Ryoko Hirosue
She studies hard and concentrates on everything of her life.
Positive and active thinking, warm-heartedness, and determination are her biggest characteristics I have observed.
Recently, I got her good news which she pass the TOFEL test to study in UH.
I strongly believe this wonderful girl will success in her life!
Azusachan!

 8. Cheng
Cheng is like everyone's old brother, who not only Taiwanese but also Japanese like and respect him.
Getting along with him for the two months, I enjoyed the growth of this term.
He always cared for our life, and made us have fun.
This old brother have a lot of talents and skills, such as trimming hair, cooking, and entertaining.
Through him, I learned, introspected, grew a lot!
I believe we will meet each other wherever.

9. Ling
Ling is the typical Taiwanese girl, who is independent, determinated, and active.
Moreover, she have more good and strong international views, and research and reasoning abilities.
However, please, don't mistake that she is a subjestive girl.
She presented the particular Taiwanese girl sweet when her friends encount any problems.
Having the honor of being her classmate, I discussed a lot of Taiwanese issue with her, and introspected again and again what Taiwanese should make efforts in.
I wish we could pursue our dreams successfully in the future.

10. Tom
Tom is my closest soul mate in Hawaii.
He is the very handsome boy whom I heard a lot of girls talking about.
For the development of the future, he decided to go abroad and study English after he finished army service and master degree.
I benefited too much from him, not only the dressing and interests, such as golf and surf,
but also the feelings of the world business and the concepts of dealing with business.
I am so honored to have this friend and expect to grow with him again.

Having a speech to be the representative of the graduates  is my biggest honor in HELP.
I got the information from Steve in the two weeks before the final party.
I was so happy and excited to have this chance to training my speech ability.
Here is the content of my final speech:

My dear teachers , friends, I am Jarrett.

I appreciate having this opportunity to share my feelings about HELP.

This is my third time to join international English Language programs.
I strongly believe this is the best one I have had.

Help focuses not only on language training but also content-based system which makes our English  ability advance more and more.

The most improtant thing is that our friendships are also getting strong through this kind of course.
I will never forget that two Japanese guys told me when Japanese say to me"how are you?"
I should answer "watashiha okamadesu".

And Masa's International Food Festival made my weight increase!!!

Atsushi's fantastic party and friendship makes me find my soul mate.

Azusa, Olivia, Noriko, Cheng, Ling, Tom and  all of you, thank you for growing with me.

Hey! we are family, aren't we?
Let's clap our hands to our friendships!
Thank you!

The most impressive thing is that the two Japanese bad guys made me drunk before the day of the speech.
I was not conscious in that day, although I practiced more than ten times for the speech.
When my speech time was coming, I felt my mind suddenly clear.
By the deep breathing, I started my speech.
With two tremble feet, I finished my speech.
Although it still had more problem needing to solve, for example my pronunciation and tone, I learned a lot from this precious experience.

Thank you Steve, I appreciate you spent your time for correct my pronunciation and speech ability.
And every friend thank you for your supports~
Mahalo!

  • Maui之旅

Maui trip is the first self-service travel in ur Hawaii days.
It is one of the best experiences in my Hawaii life, and through this, I re-realize many good friends in HELP.

Maui trip started in the morning at May 12th, the week before Institute TOFEL.
Nita, the Thailand girl, help us to order the airplane tickets, rent the cars and book the hotel rooms.
The distance is so short that it took about 40 mins to arrive there from Honolulu.

I sat beside Shimpei, an cho-very handsome Japanese boy.
Both of us hated the small airplane flight, which tend to be influenced by flow and the noise is so loud.
Like O'hau, although Maui is the very famous tour place, the downtown there are prosperous opposite to my image.
We rent two cars, of which one is van and another is compact.
Tom, the man who makes girl crazy, is the driver of our car, the van.

The first day was a very diordered day.
First, I was the navigator of our car, but I could recongnize the direction and the street of map, especially in the downtown.
After experiencing several errors, and fortunely find the directions, we arrived the destinations.
The first destination is Kapalua, the site of the pioneer of Western sailor.
There is a small port with historic interests and old streets, and could find the opposing island easy.
Briefly, it's a very simple port with a lot of wonderful beach and sometimes the road is just beside the ocean.

The second place of the first day is Kula, near the Haleakala national park.
However, it was too late, nearly 430 o'clock, so we give up the trip of first day and leave for the Hotel.

When arriving the hotel, everyone was so tired and fatigued.
Maybe in this situation, something happened.
Tom and Cheng fighted in this moment, and this was an embarrassed accident in this trip.
This secret kept in my mind, a funny experience.
However, through this experience, I had more opportunities to re-realize the friends in our group.

The first is 怡萱, a young Taiwanese girl, study in HELP for entering UH.
The second is Kyokosan, a good culinary artist, could speak fluent English.
We started to make strong relationship when that moment, and even after the Maui trip, I went to Kyokosan's house to do some treatment for her.

Fortunately, these big boys were finally peaceful.
With this experience, I decided to schedule the second day plan carefully.
Because Tom and I was suddenly commended to plan and navigate in these two days, it makes us so tired.

Though wanting to play with my friends, I had already made the plans for what we need to solve tomorrow.
( But, I regretted after several weeks because I didn't know those guys' crazy party which will make me near die....>o<...)
So in the second morning, I talked to several members and discussed where we should go and someone want to go.

Fianlly, we decided what is our schedule:
1.Before checking out, 12:00, we prepared for our dinner in the summit of mountain.
2.Go to Maalaea harbor, Maui ocean center, and go to the restaurant which was one of the sites of 50 First Dates .
3.Go to Kula again, enjoy batonical garden, and the winery near batonical garden.
4.Go to the summit of Halekala mountain and enjoy sunset and the dinner there.
5.give back cars and go home.

Seems like a great plan~ but....  haha the second we could book the restaurant for lunch.
So we changed our plans to the ocean center for dinner,
and because the ticket of ocean center was too expensive, we give up again, and instead just ate lunch.
However, the Winery is farther than I thought, but we enjoyed the time there, which is a quiet and natural paradise and the coast is beautiful~

And the most exciting scenery is the summit of Halekala mountain which is 10 thousands feet high. ( about 3030 meters)
It's easy to find wild animal on the road and the cloud is beautiful, and if you are on the summit, you see everywhere with cloud, like in the paradise.
Halekala mountain is different from Mt. Fuji and 玉山 because it is easy to arrive the summit just by car.

This is really a nice picnic in the summit, thank you, Cheng and every guys~
We enjoyed our dinner in the mountain although it was about 1800 but the light is bright.

Finishing our dinner, our travel was near the end.
But I appreciated everyone and this trip made me re-realize more friends and fulfilled my diversity of Hawaii life~
And the most important is that this experience strengthens my confidence of self-service in foreign!!!
I decided to go travel every year whether I was busy or not.
Mahalo

  • Academic Cheating

                              Academic Cheating

Thinking:

  1. If you need an impossible score to enter the school and somebody says that he can help you to cheat the examination without being caught, what will you do when you know that this method is really perfect?
  2. A famous company talked to you that it could give the position you dreamed for a long time, but you needed to create an idea as their indications. Actually, you realize that is impossible for you to do that, but you find some ideas in the Internet. Will you use the ideas or modify them to be your report after you inquire the manager of the company who didn’t know those Internet ideas?

Reading:

OSU Could Revoke Degrees Under Anti-Cheating Policy

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) _ Oklahoma State University's anti-cheating campaign has been expanded to allow for the revocation of diplomas from graduates later found to have cheated. The new policy, drafted by the OSU Faculty Council, allows for students to appeal to an advisory committee, before the matter is forwarded to the president and then regents for action. Interim President Marlene Strathe said OSU Regents can rescind degrees if they find a graduate substantially cheated on an assignment.

The university launched its anti-cheating campaign last spring, aimed to curb academic dishonesty by implementing the ``F-shriek,'' a grade of F followed by an exclamation point. The F-shriek can go on transcripts of students who fail a class because of cheating on an exam or major assignment, which lets employers and parents know why they failed.

Students aren't necessarily more dishonest these days, Timothy Dodd, director of The Center for Academic Integrity at Duke University said, but technology especially the Internet has made it easier to cheat.

Strathe said she hopes a diploma is never revoked, but this gives due process to students accused of cheating.

Cases at other universities have involved graduate students who plagiarized much or all of their thesis or dissertation lengthy documents in which plagiarism can be difficult to detect quickly.

Since the F-shriek policy went into effect one year ago, more than 20 students have gotten the punitive mark on their transcripts. Most have taken steps to get the exclamation mark removed: taking a noncredit course and having no further violations.    (http://www.kotv.com/news/local/story/?id=126745 )

Discussion:

  1. How is the effect of the academic cheating?  Please, think both advantage and disadvantage?
  2. Is the method useful to prevent graduate students from cheating? Could you provide other ways to solve this problem?

Yahoo!

  • Homosexual

The homosexual relationship is more common in western society than in oriental society. In Hawaii, the first state of America which admitted the homosexual relationship formally, we can find guys and lesbians easily. Very different from Asian countries, the culture seems having more tolerance with different value. In Taiwan, the conception of guy is still unaccepted, special in the county area. People feel uncomfortable and strange about the guys’ relationship. However, as the society is becoming more diversity, we should respect that guys are the people who have the different views of their preferences.

However, the same sex marriage is becoming more acceptable in the world. Although the homosexuals have their right to enjoy their rights as the normal couple, there still remain some problems; for example, is it fair to the child if guys want to foster a child? Or, can the feminine guy have the same power as the woman?

Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag for the 1978 San Francisco's Gay Freedom Celebration. The flag does not depict or show an actual rainbow. Rather, the colors of the rainbow are displayed as horizontal stripes, with red at the top and purple at the bottom. It represents the diversity of gays and lesbians around the world. The purple stripe is sometimes replaced with a black stripe to show masculinity or leather pride. red stands for life, orange stands for healing, yellow stands for sun, green stands for nature, blue stands for harmony, and purple stands for soul. The original rainbow flag had two additional stripes: a pink stripe and an aqua stripe:two colors that denote bisexuality. These two colors are in the Bisexual Double Triangle and the bright pink is also similar to the Pink Triangle. The original eight color rainbow flag flies over the Castro in San Francisco and from the Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender Community Center in New York City.

  • Cuture isuue- online dating

Definition:
A Net dating service, also known as online dating or internet dating, is an example of a dating system and allows individuals, couples and groups to meet online and possibly develop a romantic or sexual relationship. Net dating services provide un-moderated matchmaking through the use of personal computers, the Internet, or even cell phones.
Such services generally allow people to provide personal information, then search for other individuals using criteria such as age range, gender and location. Most sites allow members to upload photos of themselves and browse the photos of others. Sites may offer additional services, such as webcasts, online chat, and message boards. Sites sometimes allow people to register for free but may offer services which require a monthly fee.
Many sites are broad-based, with members from a variety of backgrounds looking for different types of relationships. Other sites are more specific, based on the type of members, interests, location, or relationship desired.  (from Wikipadia)

  1. Lookers and payers

How do the websites make money? You can post your information on the website and wait Mr. Right coming. But if you search or find some body who may be your Mr. Right, you need to pay some money. However, there are less people who pay the money, and the ratio is nearly 6:1.

Although they was paid some money, the websites are not responsible for your breakout.  The heartbroken don’t blame the breakup on the matchmaker. In the other hand, some information is wrong or somebody’ pictures is not himself, but the website are not in charge of these.

  1. Married, but looking

It was popular not only with the brokenhearted, but also with broken marriages. Research published earlier this year indicated that about one –third of online users are married. Many websites close this category, but still a lot of married people use them to search lovers or playmates.

  1. Running an online personal business is a pretty cheap date

One owner of the famous websites said the I have 43 employees and we’ll bring in 43 million this year. The margin are almost super-margins. Because it has so much interest, some business are in the borderline of moral. And there’s the second-tier, specialty sites, like the aggressively sexy “Nerve.com”, which have dedicated followings and promise users a more targeted field of prospective date.

  • Cuture issue-get along with rommate

What will you do if you see that your roommate are sexing when coming back your room?

This was the question that the teacher asked us. Mmm~ it seemed a big problem for Taiwanese, because we don't tend to find our roommates are doing something with their girlfriends, moreover, in Japan and Korea are in the same situation.  But this is popular to find this embarrassed situation  in this situation. And after voting in favor of living with roommates, and against, only two people wanted to have roommate, specially these two do not have experience of sharing room in Hawaii. (I'm one of them)

In this topic, our class were divided into three groups. My group is responsibile for the roommate problem, here are some information I found:

How to prevent and deal with roommate problems

1. Messiness

Clothes are piled everywhere. Old, dirty.
    a. Communication is important.
    b. Clean up and pick up after yourself and hopefully your'll get the same services in return from your roommates.

2.Money

    Your roommates are Mr. Bigger.
    a. Keep tracj of who owes who monty on a dryeras board in their litchen. They put it up on their refrigerator so everyone is aware of their financial situation and are constantly reminded to write those checks.
    b. Another option for students is to open a joint checking account. "We all deposit the same amount of money into our account each month, so that when it is time to pay bills we all pay equally."

3.Mooching

Setting up ground rules about borrowing and sharing each other's things is important to do when you first move in together.
    a. It is important to articulate what your boundaries are.
    b. Don't assume that it is okay to use your roommate's belongings. Check with them first to make aure it doesn't bother him or her.

4.Differing lifestyles

Everyone has likes and dislikes and expectations of each other. Be respectful. If there is something your roommate does that really bothers you, bring it up. Just be sure to address the issue sooner rather than later.

5.Serious issue

There are cases when your roommate's well-being is in jeopardy. Problems can arise where you cannot hekp to solve it. You need more professional help. Depression, eating disorders or mental illness occur in college students.

  • Culture issue- culture shoke

Culture shock is that you go to other places whose culture are different from your original culture and it make you difficult to adapt. For example, my poor English listening ability is one of the biggest problems. And many people from Asian countries think that the food there are so bland, full of sauce, fat, sweet, ect.  There exist always all kind of the surprising you never want. Here are my homework below:

When I decided to study in U.S., some friends told me about something, such as some unfriendly events or some crimes in American. It seems right, after I talked to some of my professors or some suggestions that I got from HELP. The safety is the most important thing that my parent concerned whether their opinions are true or warning. Actually, there are still some culture shocks during my HELP.
First, the most uncomfortable experience I met in Hawaii ( I believe I will meet again in other states of America) is that when I went to the Health center in UH for TB skin test, the clerk told me that it costs six dollars, and then I gave him because I didn't know that I should give to the cashier. After a week, I received a letter of debt and went to check why. I found this fact and felt angery, because I think the guy who took my money is dishonest. Whether he might forget or think that I am a stupid foreign person, naturally, this behavior of this guy made me think of racial discrimination.
The other upset experience is that I felt so depress when I fought luch and the clerk spoke so quichly that I couldn't understand what he said. Then, I asked him again, but he just gave me a boring face and used his impatient voice to answer. I though that my poor English ability is my fault, but people here are so unsympathetic. Consequently, it is another bad experience I met in Hawaii.
Although the problems I met are not always other's faults, there experiences made me feel that some prople ther are unsypathetic and even dishonest. Indeed, Ishould be responsible for myself and find some ways to overcome. Like when staying in the different city in my country, we still need to take care of our behavior, and don't look like a rich man, which may cause somebody to rob your money and things. I believe that many principles of preventing danger are nearly the same, therefore, what I need to do is to learn what are appropriate behaviors and legal actions in U.S.

OK! I will send you an e-mail. see you

Suddenly, I got an e-mail about him, he said
"Your guess is right on the time for what my time would be.  You are 14hours ahead of our time.  Let's do a 22:30 time, and I'll keep an eye on the time to get us finished by 23:00 your time.  Let me know what day would work for you.  I live close to school, so you only need to give me a little notice.
Don't worry, I know what you mean about speaking too fast.  As I've tried to understand Spanish I deal with that problem often.  As a result, I try to speak slow and clear with anyone who is learning English."

Chris is so kind and patient~
In Hawaii, we dated again and again. For example, he had to go to school for class and work hard in his studying.
And there remains different time zones in Hawaii and Utah, about 5 hours.

In one day's morning, two days before  the deadline, I got his call.
Here are some interview questions below.

1. Tell me about some content of your essay?
2. From essay,Chris find some question, such as why you give up your officer work in army?
3. How do you know about UU andwaht do you feel about MBA program of UU?
4. Did you apply other school?
5. If you find your colleague or your classmate have some problems, what will you do?
6. Do you want to have your own business?
7. Did you have some question about UU?

Chris spoke in a slow pace, like using pictures to tell a story, to make sure every information I got correct.

Why I apply UU?
Without a large business center and with special religion, Salt lake city is not a big city in US, and her population isn't too much.

But I will have my own business in the furture, so without necessary famous diploma, the famous and expensive universities are not considered.
Moreover, saving money becomes an important reason for me because I am not sure that I can get scholarship.
Specially, with the special religion and traditional culture, the people of salt lake city tend to get along with, such as Chris.
It could help my English ability and culture adaption.
UU also has a strong background of industry, perhaps, it may help my Taiwanes networking in the future.
Without discussing about excellent interaction and creative MBA programs, UU already are worth investing.

But my tofel grades and GMAT scores are not enough to enter UU. So I got a letter from them after three days.
Talking that this semester there are too many people applying UU, and they are sorry that I were not in the MBA 2007~2008.

Fortunately, after a week, I got another letter, which give me some infomation that I can apply some other Business programs in UU.
I believe that maybe the first letter was sent before my interview because the general type of letter needs near a week to sent to Taiwan.
Surely, the refusal is stong caused by my poor grades.
I believe I would like to ask some information about UU, because their services are beat my heart!
A successful interaction between client and organization~

  • Studying in HELP (Hawaii English Language Program)

The most difference in HELP is diversity.

It isn't like other language schools I have been to. The experience I had is only English training, or the better one is added few living skills. But in HELP, you can be satisfied by a lot of courses, such as The Da Vinci Code reading class, TOFEL, TOEIC, pubishing a Newspaper, world music, Culture Issue, etc. Yes! you get it! After grading your level, they just recommend which classes suit you. You are free to choose what you want and enjoy what you choose, does it sound like university courses? Yes, it is.

The main idea of HELP is that help you to improve your English ability, specially, it stiil has Paper-Base Test, and University of Hawaii accepts the test. Moveover, university of Hawaii is a good university, special in her Business school, the 21th in the U.S.. So, many students came from different countries, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, studying here. However, it 's the most serious problem that a lot of students are looked up in HELP.  After talking to other students here, many of them have already studies near one year! more than3~5 semeters! Yeah.... you will think why they did not study TOFEL at TOFEL conferences in their countries! They answered me that in their country there is no PBT preparative educaion. So, even looked up in HELP more than two years, they still try and try.

Generally, I like here! Not only the diversity it owns, but it also has free tang! Moveover, some 400 level class is pretty good, for example, the Da Vinci code, some old students thought it is the best one. Reading and preparing information in your own time, you just share your thoughts or ideas in the class. The teacher will prepare a lot of supplement for discussing. Yes, that helps your thinking strategy and your ability of organization.

UH is a big research center. You can find a lot of information by utilizing your student ID. If you want to training your listening and speaking ability, the most convenient way is find a DVD of campus story, and then listen, and read with the sentences. Managing your time, you will enjoy everything you want!
